Victoria Mamza, Founder and CEO of Wangaraufoods, recently spoke with Nigeria Info FM about the challenges facing Nigeria’s food industry and why food prices remain high despite increased agricultural production.
Speaking with journalist Chimamkpam Umeh-Saboyo, Victoria highlighted seasonality, inadequate storage, transportation costs and limited access to financing as major challenges affecting food availability and affordability
Food Production Is Seasonal, but Food Consumption Is Not
According to Victoria, agricultural food items are seasonal. There are periods of abundance and periods of scarcity.
The real challenge is ensuring that food produced during periods of abundance can be properly preserved, stored and made available throughout the year.
For food processing businesses like Wangaraufoods, inadequate storage facilities and fluctuating raw material prices affect procurement, production planning and profitability.
The Need for Investment Across the Food Value Chain
Victoria also stressed that improving agricultural production alone is not enough to address Nigeria’s food challenges.
“We need tailored financing, adequate training and investment across the entire food value chain — from farmers and food processors to storage businesses and logistics operators.”
Each part of the value chain plays an important role in ensuring that food moves efficiently from farms to consumers.
At Wangaraufoods, we remain committed to processing, preserving and distributing indigenous Nigerian food products while contributing to a stronger and more sustainable food system.
